This novel in three movements draws an epic landscape of Emberpit, a shameless anti-utopic bandit town that shelters the worst kind of individuals and crime life.
In the undergrounds of Emberpit, a rumour says the daughter of a doctor was kidnapped, and the revengeful father is on a killing spree to get her back. Christopher Pontius, homeless, destitute, after losing his dog, is about to commit suicide when in a curious turn of events, holds a son-of-a-rich hostage. July M. a mysteriously important girl is dying of an aggressive cancer. Ben Cromwell, a marginal unable to make the difference between good and evil, is warned by transvestite prostitute Vanessa that he has been associated to the girl’s disappearance and that her father is looking for him. Marvin McCoy and his adopted son Mohammed, heads of one of Emberpit’s most notorious crime family, are working to take over the mayor’s seat in order bring back some order in the chaotic and deadly city.
The author reinvents the oppressing atmosphere of the black novel with a grating, disturbing humour.

Vincent a réussi: propriétaire d’un bar parisien en vogue à trente ans à peine, il a une voiture de collection, un appartement au sommet d’un immeuble haussmannien qui surplombe le boulevard Saint-Germain, des amis d’enfance fidèles, une maitresse charmante et un avenir tout tracé. Tout ce qu’un homme pourrait désirer, Vincent l’a obtenu; pourtant un sentiment de vide indicible a infiltré son quotidien. Pour y remédier, Vincent et ses amis ont établi une tradition étrange: les uns après les autres, ils s’infligent de douloureux canulars, des blagues de mauvais gout qui se veulent toujours plus extrêmes jusqu’à flirter avec une cruauté punitive. La vie de Vincent est donc bien réglée, jusqu’a ce qu’une série d’événements inattendus bouleverse tout son univers.
Vu a travers les yeux d’un esthète, ce roman-tableau à la forme innovatrice suit les tribulations d’un jeune homme désabusé à travers les obstacles d’une vie trop facile.

Poussee la porte, une bouffee de chaleur m’accueille et m’etreint a l’entree du bar. C’est doucereux, insidieux, cette chaleur infiltrante qui vous tiedit l’ame, mais je la laisse couler goutte a goutte le long de mes membres, entre le tweed rape de mes vetements et ma peau tachee par l’age, comme de la resine sur l’ecorce d’un vieux tremble ecorche. Je m’approche du bar et demande un menu. Le barman me regarde d’un sale oeil et le tend d’une main recalcitrante, je le saisis sans mot dire et vais m’asseoir a une table cachee entre le comptoir et la porte de la cuisine. Je suis habitue a ce genre de reactions. Je ne serai pas la tres longtemps, de toute facon.
